Olivier Giroud has revealed just how close he was to leaving Arsenal this summer and why he decided to stay at the Emirates (via Arsenal.com).
His importance to the squad was shown on the opening match of the Premier League season. Olivier Giroud came off the bench to power home a 90th-minute winner against Leicester City to secure all three points for the Gunners.
It may not have happened that way had he left this summer. The Frenchman was heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates with Everton and West Ham United the favourites for his signature.
He decided to stay and now, Olivier Giroud has explained why he stayed at the Emirates and why he wanted to leave in the first place.
“It’s true that I was close to leaving the club,” Giroud said in the pre-match press conference. “I said I wanted to play.
“But after a big reflection with everybody around me like my family and close friends, I wanted to stay at Arsenal. I thought the story was not over at Arsenal.

“The club has given me a lot and I’ve given a lot back. As I said to the boss, our story is not finished.”
It’s good that Olivier Giroud decided to stay at the Emirates. He may not play every match but the Frenchman is a useful player to have in the squad, providing something completely different to first choice Alexandre Lacazette. Hopefully, he will get minutes in the Europa League and other cup competitions this season.
