On 21 May 2005, Arsenal beat Manchester United 5-4 on penalties to lift their 10th FA Cup at Wembley, according to Arsenal.com. There was no outright winner between the two giants of English football as the match ended in a barren draw after 120 minutes of action, consequently leading to the much dreaded penalty shoot out.
The Old Trafford outfit dominated for the better part of the match, although chances for Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney went begging. Of the five United players that took part in the shoot out, it was Paul Scholes that made the biggest difference as his shot was saved by a flying Jens Lehmann.
With Arsenal having the upper edge over their Premier League opponents, Fredrik Ljungberg, Robin van Persie, Ashley Cole and Patrick Vieira made no mistakes as they all converted to secure Arsenal’s 10th FA Cup title.
Ten years later Arsenal are on the verge of becoming the team with the highest FA Cup triumphs, 12, should they overcome Aston Villa on May 30th.
