On May 5th 1966, according to the official Arsenal website, the Gunners registered the lowest attendance for a competitive match at Highbury since World War One, with only 4,554 spectators turning up to watch the Division One clash against Leeds United. This was quite a pitiful turn out considering that the fortress that was Highbury could host up to 38,000 supporters.
As it turned out – according to the Arsenal.com– the visitors ran out 3-0 winners thanks to a brace by Scottish international Jim Storrie and one by forward Jimmy Greenhoff. A notable fact about Greenhoff is that he is labelled as the finest English player never to have played for The Three Lions, despite making nearly 600 appearances in League football.
Considering that the match against Leeds was the penultimate game of the season, Arsenal had a tall order since they were stuck in mid-table with only one match left to the close of the season.
The Gunners website has it that two days later, the Gunners beat Leicester City by a solitary goal to finish 14th in the League standings at the end of that campaign. Liverpool were crowned the 1965/66 champions despite a spirited fight from Leeds who finished in second place.
