On 6 April 1895, an inspired Woolwich Arsenal thrashed Crewe Alexandra 7-0 in a League Division Two match played at the Monor Ground in Plumstead in front of a crowd of 4000.
The game had six different goal scorers with Scottish striker Robert John Buchanan being the only one who scored a brace in the match. Other players to get on the score sheet included: Frederick William Davis, Charles Boyd Hare, Gavin Crawford, Patrick O’Brien and James Boyle.
Contrary to popular belief that teams usually succumb to their burnout immediately after a big win, Woolwich Arsenal proved their critics wrong when they hammered Walsall Town 6-1 on the same ground six days later. Just as earlier in the week, Gavin Crawford, Charles Boyd Hare and Robert John Buchanan all converted their chances in the encounter.
Notably, Peter Mortimer – who had been silent for the most part against Crewe Alexandra – scored a brace alongside Charles Boyd in the emphatic victory. Despite scoring 13 goals in three games, Arsenal managed to finish 7th in the Second Division in a season that saw Liverpool crowned champions.
Former Arsenal midfielder Fabrice Muamba was born on this day in 1988. On March 17th 2012 in an event that shocked the whole world, Muamba suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for Bolton Wanderers against Tottenham Hotspur during an FA Cup quarter final match in North London. Although his heart stopped beating for 78 minutes, he was able to survive the scare courtesy of the swiftness of his medical staff.
