On 8th May 1971, according to Arsenal.com, Arsenal beat Liverpool FC 2-1 in the FA Cup Final to win the domestic double, their first in the history of the club. The English domestic double – consisting of the First Division title and the FA Cup – is considered as one of the most prestigious achievements that a professional football club can attain in a single season, second only to the treble.
The Gunners made their intentions known when they outshined their fierce London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, beating them by a solitary goal at White Hart Lane on May 3rd to lift the First Division title as the undisputed Champions of England.
As Arsenal’s starting XI stepped upon the Wembley turf five days later, Liverpool was the only thing that stood between them and the much coveted domestic double. Despite the fact that both teams gave their all, in the end Arsenal’s clinical finishing proved vital as Mertie Mee’s side won 2-1 courtesy of an Eddie Kelly toe-poke and a George Graham winner, all of which were scored in extra-time after a scoreless 90 minutes.
Till date, George Graham’s celebration after scoring the winner remains one of the most iconic images in the FA Cup.
