As the final days of the transfer window loom closer, Arsenal fans are starting to worry that we won’t be seeing anyone else through the gates at the Emirates. Petr Cech has been our solitary signing so far, and judging by Arsene Wenger’s recent comments the Czech looks like being our first and last (via the Daily Star).
“We have good strikers,” he told the official website.
“Walcott was not used today and he’s an exceptional striker, Welbeck is coming back, we have Alexis. We have a strong striking force.”
You perhaps can’t take him at his word however, as the Frenchman is likely to give the same answer regardless of his intentions. Letting the world know we are on the lookout for a top striker would weaken our position in the transfer market, and would build up the fans’ hopes – potentially resulting in outrage if Wenger then fails to secure a world-class attacker.
There have been a number of hints to suggest that we are in fact on the lookout for a top quality striker though, and Wenger’s words could be nothing more than a smokescreen to throw us off.
Reports recently emerged that revealed we had lodged official enquiries for Bayern Munich duo Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller (via the Daily Mail), with Wenger looking to bolster our forward line with a £50m move for either player.

As the Daily Star reports, we have also been heavily linked with Karim Benzema, but Wenger has vehemently denied any links to the French forward (via ESPN).
While the Benzema connection is yet to be proved, Wenger can hardly deny that he’s looking for a new striker after approaching Bayern for both Muller and Lewandowski.
We have been linked with a host of other forwards this summer as well (via Sky Sports), and they say there’s no smoke without fire. That’s not to say we’ll definitely sign a striker – or anyone for that matter – before the window slams shut, as Wenger is clearly only targeting top quality players. We can at least sleep easier knowing that he’s seemingly on the hunt though, and if a player the calibre of Benzema, Muller, or Lewandowski becomes available then he will hopefully pounce.

Hinting that there’ll be no more signings is a win-win situation for Wenger, so you can hardly blame him for doing so. If we do end up making a marquee signing then the fans will be pleasantly surprised, but if not we can’t accuse him of lying. All the recent signs have pointed toward us signing a striker, so hopefully we aren’t left disappointed come September.
