Mesut Özil claims Arsene Wenger is the main reason he opted to join Arsenal back in 2013, with the German international praising our “great manager” for his experience and ability to offer such consistency over the years, as reported by the Metro.
With the January transfer market looming large once again, many are wondering what kind of talent Arsenal will be able to attract. The Champions League is set to resume in February, meaning top teams will be loathe to let any of their stars leave this winter. However, if all our prospective signings think like Mesut Özil, we could arguably secure any player we want.
The signing of Mesut Özil suggested a shift in the transfer market outlook for Arsenal, and many were taken by surprise when we managed to sign a footballer considered to be in the highest of brackets. Mesut himself has pointed out why he chose Arsenal instead of the many other suitors he would have undoubtedly had, with Wenger the deciding factor.
“Arsene Wenger was definitely the main reason I signed here,” Özil said (via the Metro).
“He’s a great football man. He always qualifies for the Champions League knockouts as a team. We are really happy we have such a great manager. He knows how to prepare a team and the players. He’s very experienced. I came here to develop further under Wenger, to learn more from such a great manager.”

These words from our record signing underline further the stature and respect that Arsene Wenger has in the footballing world. The ability to develop players further is rare, and Wenger has undoubtedly had some input in Özil’s improvement this season. To be able to develop a player who was already world class says a lot about the quality of the manager and the club, and we Arsenal fans will be hoping the gaffer serves up some more transfer magic in January 2016.
