David Ornstein has revealed just how close Arsenal came to signing French forward Antoine Griezmann back in 2017 (via The Athletic).
The Gunners have had more than their fair share of ‘almost’ signings down the years ranging from Cristiano Ronaldo to Yaya Toure.
These were all many years ago but now, it seems as if the Gunners came close to signing one world class player just a few seasons ago.
David Ornstein has revealed in a question and answer section with The Athletic just how close the Gunners came to signing French forward Antoine Griezmann.
“I was told that if Arsenal had qualified for the Champions League in 2017 they would have signed Antoine Griezmann,” Griezmann told subscribers.
“Missing out for the first time in 20 years ended their hopes on that one.”
The Gunners missed out on Champions League qualification to Liverpool by just one point that season. Ironically, Ornstein then went on to reveal that the club came close to signing one current Liverpool man.
“How about Van Dijk from Celtic before he joined Southampton,” Ornstein went on. “Arsenal were on his case, too!”
Antoine Griezmann would have really helped Arsenal back then. The French forward would have transformed the club’s attack, playing alongside international teammate Olivier Giroud as well as Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. However, if the Gunners had signed the player then they would presumably have missed out on current forwards Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
