Two Arsenal players have been named on this year’s Ballon d’Or longlist, but you’re unlikely to guess which two. Alexis Sanchez is the obvious choice, as the Chilean was nothing short of phenomenal in his debut season at the club. David Ospina is the other Gunner on the list though, which is certainly a questionable choice.
There’s a total of 59 players on the list (via The Guardian), with the usual suspects like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Neymar, Eden Hazard, Sergio Aguero, and Robert Lewandowski.
There are also some bizarre nominations however, with the likes of Christian Atsu, Massimo Luongo, and our own David Ospina.
The Colombian had an excellent World Cup in Brazil last year, which prompted his move to the Emirates. He quickly displaced Wojciech Szczesny as our starting keeper, although that was more down to the Pole’s antics than anything else.
Ospina had a solid record last season, and was part of our fantastic form in 2015. To suggest that he’s anywhere near close to being a Ballon d’Or contender is ludicrous though, and his performances this season have shown that.
The fact that this list is circulating in the wake of Ospina’s disastrous performance against Olympiacos makes things even worse, with fans furious with the shot-stopper for his mistakes during the game.

- Arsenal reportedly set to sign free agent after impressive trial
- Arsenal have ‘concrete interest’ in signing Bayern Munich II star
It’s not like this really means anything, and Ospina has no chance of winning the prestigious award. But his mere inclusion makes the whole thing a bit of a joke.
