When Olivier Giroud received his marching orders in the Champions League loss away to Dinamo Zagreb, Arsene Wenger experimented with Mesut Ozil as a false nine and it produced surprising results. Twitter was awash with Arsenal fans all singing their praises for Ozil’s performance.
For the first time, everyone talked about the German’s willingness to make runs and get behind the defenders. He was active throughout his time in that position and everyone acknowledged the difference he had made, recognizing his efforts, a trait that is not usually associated with Ozil.
One thing that the former Real Madrid attacker wants to improve on is the number of goals he scores in a season even though he is more widely known as a creator of goals and spotting striker’s runs than bagging them himself. I believe Arsene Wenger should continue experimenting with Ozil as a false nine.
He can play with either Giroud or Walcott in the side with different results. If Ozil plays with Walcott, he would be closer to the action and make a more immediate impact in threading through balls to suit the Englishman’s runs. He might not score as much but he would definitely make more of an impact by creating more chances.
However, if Ozil plays as a false nine with Giroud in the side, he would score many more goals, as Giroud would be able to hold up play and create chances for him to run into the box. Wenger should try and spruce things up especially with the injuries and suspensions decimating the side. Come what may, Ozil has already proven to himself and the rest of the world that he can flourish in an even more advanced position.
