Mesut Ozil has come in for criticism from former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy who has claimed the Germany international is the most overrated player in the Premier League.
Ozil has hit the headlines in recent weeks after a fine start to the season which has seen him score seven goals, including his first senior hat-trick and a late winner against Ludogorets that Eric Cantona described as a “pure football orgasm”.
However, Cundy has been left unimpressed by the Germany international and criticised his performance in Sunday’s north London derby against Spurs.
“Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil is the most overrated player in the Premier League,” he told Football Fan Zone. “Every week I get Arsenal fans bigging him up to me, telling me how good he is and that he’s world class but he’s not.
“If you want to talk about world class, lets look at someone like Luis Suarez for example, he’s the standard and Ozil can’t be mentioned in the same breath as the former Liverpool man.
“Last week we were forced to bow to the midfielder because he scored a wonder goal against a bunch of Bulgarian farmers to complete an Arsenal come back but: Why were Arsenal losing 2-0 in the first place? Who on earth are Ludogorets that we should be getting so excited?

“Even worse after such a ‘great’ performance mid week, you would have expected him to then put a Spurs side without a win in 6 games to the sword right? Wrong! Again he went missing when Arsenal needed him most.”
Cundy has also criticised Ozil’s mentality and feels he is not even Arsenal’s best player, insisting Alexis Sanchez is the most impressive performer at the Emirates.
“Aside from not being world class, he isn’t even the best player at his club right now as Sanchez is proving more important and I wouldn’t have him anywhere near Chelsea,” he added.
“I was asked who I would take between him and Dele Alli prior to the North London derby, give me Alli all day. At least he has a backbone and heart for the fight.
“For me Ozil epitomises Arsenal, the two were made for each other. He’s pretty on the eye but when the bullets start flying he is nowhere to be seen.
“He’s the kind of person that rocks up to a party when the cake is being cut and blows out the candles but isn’t there to help set up or to help clean up after either.”
Ozil is a footballer who very much divides opinion but he has started the season in fine form, and while he may have failed to find his best form again, Cundy’s rant is ill-judged and unnecessary.
