There is a theory about the lethal combination of Ozil and Walcott and if they had played more together, a lot more goals would have been scored. The theory goes that if Ozil with his superb through balls was able to get a fast runner like Walcott to latch on to them, bags and bags of goals would have ensured
If this theory is sound, now that Theo Walcott is injured, why not use a fast runner like Serge Gnabry or Chamberlain in that role? Wenger tried to put Chamberlain on the wing against Liverpool at Anfield and we all know what a disaster that turned out to be. Against Crystal Palace, Chamberlain was put in the centre of midfield with a great deal of success but that meant Ozil was not able to thread through balls to anyone.
Serge Gnabry likes to cut in from the right like Walcott and has pace to burn. He has done this very effectively. Ozil can use that to his advantage and try to find Gnabry with every chance he gets. Gnabry’s inexperience can work against us yet at the same time his youthful enthusiasm can be used to great effect. Against Bayern in Munich, Chamberlain performed admirably. Bayern was not be able to deal with our attack. Any team would struggle to deal with a team with a lot of pace. The question is would Wenger be willing to gamble on Gnabry against Bayern?
Looking at the other midfielders, one cannot tell whether they are better on the wing or in the centre and when they interchange during the game, there is a certain fluidity that is beautiful to watch. The Rosicky-Wilshere-Carzola-Chamberlain combination has been effective due to the one touch football they play. Ozil is used to playing through the middle and has to learn how to interchange with these players better. His technique level is very high and so that should not be a problem.
One thing that has shocked me about Ozil is his pace. He is no Walcott but is quicker than most. Why doesn’t he use that to his potential instead of remaining static? With his technique, and speed he can definitely score a lot of goals so I definitely agree with Wenger there.
