Mesut Özil has been excellent recently, but there’s one area of his game he wants to improve. The German playmaker insists that he wants to score more goals this season, letting the fans know that he’s doing what he can to improve his shooting and self-belief in front of goal.
Our record signing has been a key component in our brilliant start to the Premier League campaign, and has played a part in a huge number of our goals this season. Despite his huge number of assists however, he’s scored very few goals, and this is something he wants to change.
“After training there are a few shooting drills that can help with self-belief,” Özil told Arsenal Player.
“In general, when you look at my chances in front of goal, I’ve taken them well.
“Every player wants to score goals. I’m intending to score more this season than in previous years. It’s most important for us to perform well and to be successful – I’m looking forward to giving assists or scoring goals.
“My aim is to score more goals this season than in the last two. I think I’m on a good path and will achieve that.”

It would be great to see our World Cup winning No.10 getting on the scoresheet more often, as it is arguably the one thing that is really missing from his game. He often gets into excellent positions, but we’ve regularly seen him opt to pass when perhaps he should have shot.
We’ve seen the impact he has on a game when he’s truly on form, and his goal and assist against Manchester United earlier this season is testament to that.
“It all happened quickly,” he continued.
“The move was really fast and when Theo played the ball back to me, I saw the gap in the corner and put it there.
“For me it was very good, it was a very positive game because I scored a goal and gave an assist. It was a special afternoon for me.”
The fact that he’s getting into these positions suggests he’s more than capable of adding goals to his game, and a lot of it is probably mental.
Even without goals he is still bringing plenty to the side, and is leading the Premier League in terms of assists this season. He also plays a huge part in our build-up, and his influence cannot be understated.
