Per Mertesacker has responded to the comments made by Troy Deeney that Arsenal lack ‘cojones’ after their defeat to Watford (via The Metro).
It was a story which grabbed the headlines in the aftermath of Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Watford in the Premier League last Saturday.
Troy Deeney came off the bench to inspire the home side to the win but it was his comments after the match which made more of a fuss.
“There’s a reason they lost and is wasn’t because of one penalty,” Deeney told BT Sport after the match.
“I have to watch what I say but… having a bit of cojones, I think the word is. Having a bit of nuts”

Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker started the match and grabbed his side’s only goal. Now, the German defender has responded to Deeney’s comments for the first time since they hit the headlines.
“Afterwards, it’s easy to judge and easy to say words and think we are lacking something,” Mertesacker said.
“We have to think how we can provide better performances, especially away from home, where it gets tight and difficult. We should concentrate on ourselves first of all.
“There are so many guys involved and so many opinions, which is fine, but we need to focus on ourselves and learn lessons from that.”
There was certainly some truth in Troy Deeney’s comments. Arsenal lacked courage on Saturday and the conviction to stand up to the pressure of Watford’s performance. Mertesacker is right to say that Arsenal should focus on themselves but maybe they could learn a thing or two from Deeney’s comments.
