Has Gerrard Pique let the cat out of the bag during a press conference, confirming Cesc Fabregas’ departure from Barcelona? Hardly. Nothing like a cheeky joke huh?
Barca centre back Pique, known for his sense of humour, was caught discussing Cesc’s ‘future’ with Spain boss Vicente del Bosque on microphones prior to a press conference. The ‘news’ will no doubt spread like wildfire, much to the amusement of Pique and his Catalan team mates.
The discussion was hushed but could be made out from the conveniently turned on microphones, where the Spaniards could be seen smiling and attempting to hide laughter. The defender suggested his team mate and good friend Fabregas had already secured a move to another club for €33million, but failed to mention a team name.
[Cesc Fabregas] told me [the deal] is done. He’s already leaving, he told me that it is €33million.
Del Bosque replied:
Poor president (in reference to Club President Josep Maria Bartomeu). He can’t win for losing.
Although it may be easy for Gooners to get excited (or annoyed) with news of a potential transfer for our former captain, it was clearly a prank aimed at the incessant rumours that continue to surround Cesc.
The video of the press conference is worth a watch, good to see some players can maintain a sense of humour during the silly season.
