The deal seemed almost complete with reports widespread that the German international had signed a pre-contract agreement, meaning he will link up with Wenger’s men as soon as the summer transfer window opened. But the prolific scorer who has netted 16 times this season in 20 appearances admits nothing is official yet.
Podolski told German Sky Sports:
Contrary to reports from the past few days, nothing has been decided yet. If there is something to report, then I’ll do it.
Former Cologne sporting director Volker Finke also reiterated Podolski’s comments but suggested that there have been talks already with a final decision still to come. Finke said:
The final die is not yet cast. It’s part of the business and so it is generally agreed that only when the die is cast and everything is signed – when it comes to a transfer, as it is being discussed in the newspapers – only then can the parties involved make comments. It is still not settled and therefore we have no comment.
Finke left the club by ‘mutual consent’ after Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Hertha Berlin, so is deemed a reliable source. Wenger also refused to comment on the situation but did little to squash any rumours relating his side to the German striker.
He will be a fantastic acquisition that will add real quality and depth to the attacking positions as he is a versatile forward that can play out wide if required. Hopefully he will be the first of many exciting transfers this summer!!
