If perhaps for one unfortunate reason (or two) you didn’t watch the game against City and are wondering “Hmm so who got the red card, was it Kompany?” then you’re in for a huge surprise. Following the 5-0 thrashing of Swansea in the hands of Mourinho’s boys on Saturday, the defending champions came out guns blazing with a strong line up with the likes of Zabaleta, Silva, Navas and Aguero. However, what they didn’t know was that with one Francis Coquelin, Arsenal were going into a sword fight with an assault rifle.
The 23-year old defensive midfielder put on his best performance of the season with his astute presence and concise passing skills as Arsenal registered a 2-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday. Given that Coquelin’s inclusion into the starting XI was more enforced rather than a tactical gamble (due to injuries to skipper Mikel Arteta and midfielder Jack Wilshere), his positioning and determination suited the team as it allowed Santi Cazorla and Alexis to flourish going forward.
Speaking to the media after the victory, the former France Under-21 star had this to say:
I try to do the best I can and I’m very happy that we won.
It’s a tough game to win but we did that and now we need to move onto the next one because there is no point winning here and then losing at home in the next game.
Hopefully we can win the next game as well.
Coquelin, who was on loan at Charlton Athletic a little more than six weeks ago, received a call up to the first team following several injuries woes in the defensive midfield role. As it is, the midfielder is seemingly ahead of Flamini in the pecking order and could replace Arteta in the starting XI with a good run of form. Having joined the Gunners at 16, Coquelin is finally living up to his potential.
