The North London club are in desperate need of a centre-back, as they only have Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as senior options following the £15 million sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona.
The Greek international emerged as a potential £8 million target for the Gunners earlier this week, with some reports even stating that Manolas has undergone a medical at the club.
Arsene Wenger has since insisted no deal is in place for the 23 year old, but Parlour believes he would be a good addition if the move goes ahead. He said:
I think it would be a good signing.
They definitely need strengthening at the back. With Vermaelen moving on to Barcelona, they’ve lost a player there.
Chambers has been excellent since he’s come into the side from Southampton – what a great signing that was – but certainly he’s looking for good quality defenders and so that would be a good addition to the squad.

His strength, awareness and talent on the ball makes him the full package in terms of a centre back. His current playing style relies hugely on physicality and like Laurent Koscielny in his first couple of years he demonstrates signs of solid ability but he is apparently prone to the odd error. This is something which can be cut out of his game as he is only 23, but not an ideal trait to be known for.
His defensive displays at the World Cup were very impressive and is what basically put him on the map this summer. He played in every minute of Greece’s games in Brazil, winning 75% of his tackles and 71% of his aerial duels during the tournament.
A quick look at his Champions League stats offers something comparable to the Gunners backline. He won 62.3% of his total duels and 64% of aerial duels, he’s pretty much spot on with Laurent Koscielny who managed 61.2% and 65% respectively but Mertesacker trounced them and was into the 70’s for both.
The 23-year-old also offers a goal threat going forward, last campaign he managed to net twice in his seven Champions League appearances.
Should we Buy?
The Gunners have great depth in attack but lack it in defence, so signing an established but young defender like Manolas is key. His signing would allow Wenger to experiment with Chambers in the defensive midfield role so the signing could potentially kill two birds with one stone.
He would bring a lot to the Gunners and will give the team four steady options at centre-back. He would also allow Arsenal to utilize Calum Chambers more often as Mathieu Debuchy’s deputy at right-back or even allow Wenger to give Chambers a run as a defensive midfielder.
