Real Madrid shortlisted Arsene Wenger and were keen for the Frenchman to take over last season as they had doubts over the appointment of Zinedine Zidane.
The World Cup winner replaced Rafael Benitez at the Bernabeu in January, his first senior managerial position, although he had previously worked with the club’s reserve team Real Madrid Castilla.
Real president Florentino Perez, was wary of Zidane’s appointment and had made a shortlist of candidates to replace the Frenchman, should he fail to impress at the helm of the club, according to the Daily Mail.
Wenger, who Real Madrid have reportedly tried to recruit twice previously, featured on the shortlist and was considered to be a genuine contender for the role.
Zidane ultimately enjoyed a successful season, while los Blancos finished second in La Liga, a point behind champions Barcelona, they did claim the Champions League, beating Atletico Madrid on penalties.
The report also claims that Wenger was aware of the interest from Real Madrid as he guided the Gunners to a second-placed finish behind surprise champions Leicester City.

Real Madrid may well have been interested in Wenger but any potential move would likely to have failed. Wenger’s refusal to break a contract is well-known and the Frenchman’s current deal does not expire until this summer.
The 67-year-old has recently celebrated 20 years in charge of the north Londoners although has so far refused to commit his future to the club and his plans for next season are, as yet, unknown.
