Reiss Nelson has revealed what Arsenal’s academy manager Per Mertesacker has advised him to do while on loan at Hoffenheim (via Sky Sports).
Things have come off the boil for Reiss Nelson at Hoffenheim in the last couple of months.
The on-loan Arsenal star had a lightning-fast start to life in the Bundesliga but his time on the pitch and performance level has dropped since the turn of the year.
Despite that, the 19-year-old played a role for the England Under-21s this week, grabbing an assist for his side’s only goal in the 1-1 draw with Poland Under-21s.
“I’m learning different culture. I’m taking in the environment,” Nelson said of his time in Germany before being asked about the role played by Arsenal’s Academy Manager, Per Mertesacker.

“Per’s just been very direct to me, telling me it’s not always about football sometimes it’s about off the pitch.
“He tells me ‘you’re learning a new language, new environment, just keep up with your performances’.”
Reiss Nelson is clearly a talented player and perhaps it’s good that he’s going through something of a dip in form so early in his career. The 19-year-old is still incredibly young and has a long way to go in his career. Let’s hope he continues to learn from his experience in Germany and comes back to England a better player.
