Arsenal are reportedly set to trigger a buy-back clause in Carlos Vela’s Real Sociedad contract, according to reports in Spain.
The 25 year old has bagged 15 goals in 36 La Liga games for the San Sebastian club this term, also striking twice in the Copa del Rey.
The report states that the Gunners have offered £3 million for Vela and have communicated their desire to sign their former striker. His representatives were at the Emirates few days ago to discuss a move, where the Gunners made clear their desire to bring the player back to England.
It further states that Sociedad could have sold the striker elsewhere and owed Arsenal a percentage of the sale total, but their failure to do so has left them vulnerable to losing the striker to the Gunners.
The Mexican, who will miss this summer’s World Cup after falling out with El Tri management back in 2010, left the Emirates in 2012 for around £3m, after struggling for opportunities under Arsene Wenger. His contract with the Basque outfit runs until 2015.
Vela has made no secret of his desire to come back to the Premier League, with the player earlier this month stating that he is open to the idea of moving to England, even potentially his former side the Gunners.

He has maintained impressive scoring form across three seasons as he notched 41 in 106 La Liga appearances for the Basque club, adding 28 assists. He is a more rounded striker who could well provide Arsenal with a much needed additional attacking option to help offer support for the likes of Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski.
His return certainly makes sense as he is already accustomed to the League and also has plenty to prove in a Gunners shirt. He offers the kind of fast-paced passing football Wenger strives to produce.
The striker represents something of a steal if Arsenal can bring him back for as little as £3 million. His return would add a quality striker to the ranks without impacting the finances too heavily. He is certainly worth a punt at the reported price and we stand to lose very little if he fails to excel during a second tenure. It would be great if we can get a big name striker along with the Mexican, as he will need support leading the line alone.
