Arsenal are readying a £21million move for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender, according to reports, as Wenger looks to reinforce the defensive end of his engine room.
The Gunners had a £15m bid rejected last summer, however the Bundesliga outfit could be swayed into departing with the German international should they receive the right amount of money and if there is a desire on the players end to move.
The 25-year-old signed a new contract until 2019 in October which has made his acquisition more difficult. But Leverkusen could part with their prized asset should a bid in the region of £21m come in from the north London side.
Arsenal are in need of an exciting defensive midfielder who can add steel to the Gunners engine room but remain a key ball player similarly to the aging Mikel Arteta. The German, who is currently sidelined with a thigh injury sustained in the build up to this summers World Cup, would represent an excellent signing for the future if Wenger could pull this one off.
He’s certainly on the Gunners radar of with a bid confirmed from last summer, but unfortunately there is little substance in the reports circulating at present. Bender has stated in recent months that he wishes to remain with Leverkusen however, as he is not yet ready for the step up to a major club just yet. But if he could be convinced otherwise then the Gunners can slowly ease him into the team and life in London with both Arteta and Mathieu Flamini experienced options in the side.
- Arsenal must outmanoeuvre Galatasaray to win race for £2m ‘bargain’ transfer
- Arsenal reportedly set to sign free agent after impressive trial
- Arsenal have ‘concrete interest’ in signing Bayern Munich II star
Bender has plenty of potential and would have been an important player in the German squad this summer had it not been for his injury. For £21m he would represent an attainable option in midfield and someone most Gooners would be happy to see in red and white next season.
