Arsenal are reportedly ready to launch a sensational bid to sign Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, according to reports in Metro.
The 27 year joined the Gunners as a youngster from Barcelona and spent eight years in London before re-joining the Catalans in 2011. The Spaniard has scored eight goals and assisted 13 in the league for the Catalan giants this season, but has reportedly been unhappy at the club.
The report suggests that Arsenal are set to make a £35 million bid for Cesc Fabregas after he told Arsene Wenger that he wants to return to the North London club. His days at Barcelona look increasingly numbered with new manager Luis Enrique not thought to be a fan of the midfielder.
It further states that Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for the the pass-master, and it is understood that he wants to return to England but the Gunners are working on a offer to beat their rivals.
Arsenal inserted the clause as part of his £35 million sale (+£5m in add ons), meaning Barca have to inform them if they receive a bid, and Wenger’s side then get first refusal. If they do not take up their option and Fabregas moves to another club, the FA Cup winners will receive a share of the profit from any sale.
Fabregas is unquestionably a class player, but the Gunners already have a wealth of talent which is quite capable of filling any roll the Spaniard would fit. Players like Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Tomas Rosicky, and Santi Cazorla are more than capable in the attacking midfield roll, interchangeable behind the main striker.

However there’s potentially 60 games over the course of the season and the Gunners failed title bid has proved that they are still somewhat short in midfield. The fans bemoaned the lack of quality behind Ramsey, Ozil and Walcott, then why not cover your back by buying quality players if they become available? There’s no arguing that buying a player like Fabregas would increase Arsenal’s chances of silverware next season.
The psychological impact his signing will bring is massive. The change in the team when Ozil arrived was palpable and while the player himself faded, the impetus was maintained and the belief garnered manifested itself in an FA Cup trophy. Cesc was loved by all at the club, and only a fool could begrudge him returning to his home to play for the team he grew up with.
The beauty of Fabregas is that he could play in several different positions. Since moving to Barcelona, he has added versatility to his game and although he has been criticised for failing to nail down a regular starting role, he has consequently developed an ability to operate in different areas of the field. He will undoubtedly make Arsenal better and if the money is there, then the Gunners should sign him.
