French newspaper L’Equipe are reporting that Arsenal on the brink of signing Brazilian winger Bernard from Atletico Minerio.
The 20-year-old is expected to play for his club Atletico Mineiro in the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday night before flying to London on Thursday, the French newspaper claim.
Bernard, who featured for Brazil at the Confederations Cup, has also been linked with Tottenham and Liverpool, but the Gunners have jumped to the front of the queue for his signature.
The paper is also reporting that Bernard is due to pen a five-year contract with the north Londoners worth €3m per year.Bernard has five caps for Brazil and was part of the team’s victorious Confederations Cup campaign earlier this summer.
Arsenal have been bullish about their transfer plans this summer, but so far have only picked up French rising star Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer. They have bid for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, and been linked heavily with Gonzalo Higuain of Real Madrid and even Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney.
Bernard is a little man with a growing reputation. The attacking midfielder is just 5’4” but stands head and shoulders above his teammates in terms of talent.

Bernard looks most effective with a striker in front of him, and at least one more creative player alongside him, this allows him to utilize his versatility. A creative player moving around allows him to exploit his great knack for one-two passing and classic tiki-taka football.
Bernard’s touch is immaculate, and probably one of his greatest assets. At the same time, he is a finisher who prefers to lurk around the 18-yard box allows Bernard to make good use of his ability to switch to wide positions and launch in crosses. If true, it’s a remarkable signing by Arsenal, especially considering how much interest there has been in the Brazilian from several of their Premier League rivals.
He is a player who could easily get into the Arsenal first team and a player who could release German Lukas Podolski from having to play that left midfield role, which has so far stopped him from performing regularly as a center forward.
Signing Bernard would enable Wenger to rotate Cazorla with a younger but equally skillful player.Eventually, the prodigiously talented Bernard could even take over as Arsenal’s primary play-maker.
It remains to be seen how much credibility there is to this story, but they seem quite sure this is going ahead.
