Joel Campbell looks to be edging closer to an Arsenal exit, with reports from a number of sources suggesting he could be on his way to Villarreal this January until the end of the season.

The 22-year-old is reportedly set to be part of the deal that sees Gabriel Paulista heading the other way, with Real Sociedad looking likely to miss out on the player. A deal was reportedly agreed between the player’s agent and David Moyes’ side, but Arsene Wenger had already sealed the deal with Villarreal.

With the Costa Rican approaching the end of his current deal at the club, Wenger is keen to extend his contract. The Frenchman is hopeful of tying him down on a long term deal, with reports from a journalist in his home nation suggesting he will sign an extension before making the switch to Spain.

The Daily Mail reported that the young forward was absent from training on Saturday, which only served to increase speculation that he would be leaving the Emirates.
Regardless of where he ends up, it is clear he is not going to get the first team football he desires at Arsenal. He looks like a definite talent, so it would be a shame to see him leave the club on a permanent basis.
