Mesut Ozil has made an odd demand as his contract negotiations at Arsenal are about to continue after a halt due to Euro 2016. The German has asked for Jack Wilshere’s squad number now that the England midfielder has gone on a loan to Bournemouth.
Jack Wilshere held No.10 during his time at Arsenal and now Ozil wants to wear it. The Arsenal playmaker recently gave an interview to German newspaper Express, where he discussed his contract negotiations and future at the club. In the same interview he talked about wanting to have No.10 on his shirt.
“It just went free, and I definitely want it,” said Ozil who has recently changed his Germany squad number to No.10 after Lukas Poldolski’s retirement from the team.
“I’d wanted the number for years but so did Lukas Podolski. And he got to keep it because he had more caps than I did. Now I’ve pounced.”
The 27-year-old now wants the same shirt number at Arsenal as he revealed the great importance it holds for him. “Of course I have previously given those in charge [at Arsenal] a signal.
“The number is right for me and my position as a playmaker. For me, the number means a lot. It’s my favourite number.

“Football legends such as Zinedine Zidane, Diego Maradona or Pele have this number carried on the back.”
Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp used to wear No.10 during his time at Arsenal. It is hoped that the legendary stature attached to the number inspires Ozil to follow The Iceman’s footsteps and become a legend too at the club.
Ozil has worn 11 ever since he moved from Real Madrid in 2013. He is expected to sign a contract extension along with Alexis Sanchez and if granting him the number eases negotiation there’s no harm in letting him claim the No. 10.
It’s all going wrong for Jack Wilshere.
