There has been speculation over the captain’s future in recent weeks as Van Persie only has two years remaining on his contract, however the Dutchman spoke out on his commitment to the Arsenal cause prior to his brace against Sunderland:
I want to say something about my commitment to Arsenal because there have been many stories in the media lately
I am committed to Arsenal, and that’s how it is, despite people [in the media] making up stories. For example, they said I was selling my house, but that’s nothing recent, I moved house last year.
I see stories which make me laugh, but I can see how frustrating it is from the fans’ point of view. But I am committed to Arsenal. I am captain, and fans should not believe everything they read.
As for that house story, the house has been for sale for a while, but I’m not living on the streets or anything, I have found a really nice house, and yes, it’s in London! So I want to put that straight, I am committed, and I will show that on the pitch.
Once again Robin Van Persie won the match almost single handedly, which only further expresses his importance at Arsenal. Wenger mentioned that Robin Van Persie ‘was the difference’ in his post-match comments, and also was asked about his captains contract situation. He said:
The ideal situation is that he extends his contract but if he doesn’t you have to respect that. You know what is important is that he plays like he plays because we are all here to see special football players and he is a special football player.

The only way that we will be able to keep RVP is winning some sort of silverware and offering him a pay package that is worthy of his talent. He is one of the best players in England and is in the best form of his life. So it is more important than ever for Arsenal to start the ball rolling on a nice run of wins.
