Alexis Sanchez is tired! Despite his most valiant attempts, he is not Superman and is suffering severely from burnout. I can understand Wenger’s hesitancy to give Sanchez a break due to the 100% effort that he always gives on the field and his usual ability to dispatch chances with relative ease.
However, watching Sanchez and the tame shot he attempted in the first half over the weekend instead of the blistering, curling shot we have become so accustomed to, it was obvious he has run himself to the ground and needs an extended break to be ready for the second half of the season.
In his stead, there is a player with the technical ability and same passion to work hard for the team who is raring to go when given a chance. His name is Joel Campbell, a player blessed with pace, dribbling ability, with a booming shot to boot. He is able to play anywhere across the front three and is always willing to take on players rather than take the safe bet and layoff a pass to a colleague.
Campbell’s style of play is more direct, rather similar to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and would inject pace to our attack. While Wenger was more than willing to keep him this summer and is still convinced about Campbell’s abilities, he has preferred to look elsewhere when choosing his midfield options making Campbell something of an enigma to Arsenal fans. Is he a secret weapon about to unleash terror on the rest of the league or a player with technical and tactical deficiencies that Wenger has discovered?
When Arsenal fans watched Campbell during the world Cup, there was plenty of buzz that he could finally succeed at Arsenal. Instead, he was shipped off to Villareal in another of his long line of loan spells where he performed admirably. He has been given another chance to have a crack, one that he needs to grab with both hands.
