Francis Coquelin has been ruled out for at least two months (via the Mirror), and Arsene Wenger’s faith in the likes of Mathieu Flamini, Mikel Arteta, and Calum Chambers is somewhat worrying.
We need to bring a new defensive midfielder to the Emirates in January, and despite our manager regularly reminding us of just how difficult it is to buy during the winter window, there are a number of players who could be available.
We’ve put together a list of defensive midfielders we could sign in January, all of whom are easily within our price bracket:

The German international is hugely talented, but for some reason continues to be farmed out on loan by Bayer Leverkusen. We could give him a permanent home at the Emirates, although if past reports are anything to go by he won’t come cheaply (via the Daily Mail).
6) Maxime Gonalons
We’ve been linked with the Lyon captain for quite some time (via the Metro), but for whatever reason a deal has never gone through. The experienced Frenchman would be an excellent signing, and as he’s just heading into his prime would really add something to the squad. And with the relatively low prices touted in the past – around the £15m mark (via the Metro) – he could be exactly up Wenger’s street.
5) Victor Wanyama
The powerful Kenyan has long been linked with an Arsenal transfer, and once even suggested he’d love a move to the Emirates (via the Mirror).
He comes with Premier League experience, and would be the dedicated defensive midfielder we need to back up Francis Coquelin.
Southampton are unlikely to let him go cheaply though, so Wenger needs to be willing to open his chequebook.
