Former Arsenal star Charlie Nicholas has heaped praise on Laurent Koscielny ahead of the North London Derby this weekend, claiming the French centre-back is better than all Tottenham’s options, as reported by Sky Sports.
The player turned pundit claims he’d take the Frenchman over Spurs duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen in a heartbeat, suggesting that Koscielny was a cut above the other two.
“No, my first choice would be Koscielny – I’d pick Koscielny before those two [Alderweireld and Vertonghen],” Nicholas said, when asked who had the best defenders.
“I think they’ve glued well, they’ve both played for the Belgian international team and they’ve worked well, but Aston Villa still gave them a few issues, and they were a half-baked team at one stage.”
He’s certainly not wrong, as Koscielny is unquestionably one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League. The Tottenham duo are certainly the best options that little club down the road have had for years, but they have nothing on the Boss.
Unfortunately, it looks as though Koscielny won’t be fit for the North London Derby this weekend, as he was labelled a major doubt after our loss against Bayern Munich (via ESPN).

Arsene Wenger claimed in his post-match interview that he had a “small chance” of being fit (via ESPN), but it seems unlikely he’ll be risked if there is any doubt about his fitness.

It’s clearly only a short term problem though, so he should be back in action sooner rather than later.
