Graeme Souness absolutely tore into Arsenal following our embarrassing performance against Manchester United this past Sunday afternoon, calling us weak and revealing his disappointment in our display, as reported by the Daily Star.
We were unequivocally terrible at Old Trafford, and we deserve all the criticism that’s coming our way. It was a game we should have dominated, but instead we practically rolled over for a below par Manchester United.
Pundits and fans were expecting us to show our title credentials against Louis van Gaal’s side, to put in a dominant display and re-close the gap on Leicester City at the top of the table. United are far from themselves at the moment, and with injuries plaguing them we should have been able to deliver.
Our lacklustre display ensured we headed back to London with nothing though, and Souness rightfully blasted us after the game.
“I want to be harsh on Arsenal. It was more of a tippy-tippy football by Arsenal, going nowhere, that’s why they have 60 per cent possession. Arsenal today bordered on being a joke. Arsene Wenger must be tearing his hair out,” he said.
“There’s a word I want to use but I can’t use it which describes a lack of something that real players have and this Arsenal team lack it in abundance.

“And I’ll stand on my head if they prove me wrong and go and win this league, because that today was totally unacceptable.
“I thought today they would come here with an opportunity to put a marker on the wall and say, ‘we’re back in this race.’
“And they’ve come back here today and been so insipid, so weak and pussyfooted.
“All they’ve done today is said to the opposition this team can be rolled over. If I was an Arsenal supporter I would be so angry right now.”
Sloppy play led to us going two goals down early on, and after that we never looked like recovering. Our performance was uninspired and lazy, and we didn’t play like a team that has Premier League title aspirations.
With the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Manchester City faltering this season, it really is our best chance of a title in years. We appear to have no interest in grabbing the opportunity though, as there was a complete lack of desire there against United.
You could obviously argue that confidence was low following our loss against Barcelona and the players were tired after our midweek action. United had less of a rest than we did though, so there really is no excuse.

We may have already given ourselves too much to do with regards to the title, as while we have more than a few difficult fixtures remaining, Leicester City have a comparatively easy run. At the very least we have to improve significantly, or we’ll have no choice but to settle for top four once again.
