Nacho Monreal has been one of many surprise packages this season, with the Spaniard performing superbly and making the left-back spot his own. There have been reports linking him with a move back to La Liga, but the 29-year-old is happy at Arsenal and is hoping to sign a new deal, according to the Daily Star.
Arsenal transfer rumours
The versatile defender was seen as a liability last season, and we looked a far better side with Kieran Gibbs at left-back. That has all changed this campaign however, and Monreal has proved himself one of our more reliable players.
He has been excellent this season, and has even shown that he can do a job at centre-back when required. The former Malaga man is known for his defending rather than his attacking verve, but he has still chipped in with a couple of important assists – as well as a vital goal in our FA Cup clash with Manchester United.
Despite links with Athletic Bilbao (via the Daily Star), Monreal insists he has no intention of leaving, and is hoping to extend his current deal beyond the one year he has remaining.
“I have one more year on my contract and I would like to stay at Arsenal,” he is quoted as saying.

I am very lucky to play for Arsenal, and am very happy to play for Arsenal
“If the boss wants me to stay, I will do. I only have one more year left on my contract but I am in contact with the club.
“My main intention is to stay at Arsenal and I hope I can extend my contract.”
We could certainly improve on both Gibbs and Monreal at left-back, but it isn’t a priority position. You don’t feel either player is likely to let you down, and hopefully both players will continue to push each other to get better.
