Arsenal full back Nacho Monreal has been impressed by the performances of his compatriot Hector Bellerin, and admits that it is a ‘pleasure’ to play alongside the youngster (via Arsenal.com). Bellerin, who is just 20, came into the spotlight last season after a long term injury to Mathieu Debuchy and has since monopolised the right back spot, making it his own.
The former Barcelona man is a breath of fresh air for the Arsenal defence; he combines good positional awareness with blistering levels of pace, allowing him to get forward on a regular basis and still be able to recover quickly to defend. His performances against some of the best wingers in the world have revealed that he is mature beyond his years, and he is developing into more and more of an attacking threat as he gains match experience. The game against Bayern Munich was the perfect demonstration of his abilities; he managed to hold off Douglas Costa for a decent amount of the game and was instrumental in creating our second goal.
Speaking to Arsenal Player, Monreal affirmed that Bellerin has a bright future ahead of him, and also spoke about the prospects of the season ahead. He said, “He is very young and is only 20 years-old and plays with incredible maturity on the pitch. I think he is one of the best full backs and will be in the future as well. He has a very long career ahead of him and he has been showing his quality and it is a pleasure to play along side him.
“Hector is simply a revelation this season and also last season as well. There are good times and there are bad times in a season. At the moment things are going very well and the whole team is working very well and we are in good form.
“We are not conceding many goals but there are other times this season where we will concede more but we can’t worry about that. We have to give 100 per cent each game and we know we have top level players capable of scoring at any moment so when we keep a clean sheet we can always guarantee ourselves victory. The most important thing is to give 100 per cent.”
Arsenal are in second place on the league table, with the same number of points as leaders Manchester City. If the players continue to turn out performances like they have over the past couple of weeks, then we can start to apply some serious pressure to the Citizens and possibly open up a gap at the top of the table heading into the festive period.
