Nacho Monreal was recently asked who he would put in an ultimate XI of players past and present that he has played alongside, and he made some interesting choices.
There were four Arsenal stars named in the Spaniard’s ultimate XI, with the entire team named below:
GK) Iker Casillas
Monreal named his Spanish international teammate in goal, claiming he was the best goalkeeper he has ever played with. Casillas has arguably gone down hill significantly in recent years, but there aren’t too many other options available for our left-back to choose from.
RB) Cesar Azpilicueta
- Arsenal and Liverpool both want a surprising Premier League midfielder
- [Team news] Arsenal v Rapid Vienna line up – Arteta to rotate as fans return
- Two signings set in January as Arsenal give Arteta ‘vote of confidence’
It’s hard to argue here, as the Chelsea full-back has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League over the last two years. Whether deployed on the left or the right, he is solid both defensively and offensively – what a shame he plays for Chelsea.
LB) Jordi Alba
The pacy Barcelona star is arguably one of the best attacking full-backs in the game, and it’s not surprising to see him on this list.
CB) Laurent Koscielny
The Frenchman is finally starting to get the recognition he deserves, and has elevated himself to the point that he is now one of the best central-defenders in the world.
CB) Sergio Ramos
The Real Madrid star is a bit of a loose cannon, but there is no question he is a talented centre back. His versatility could have put him at right-back, but Monreal opted to deploy him centrally.
