We look to have suffered a blow in our chase for talented young defensive midfielder William Carvalho, with the Sporting Lisbon manager insisting the 23-year-old will be staying at the club this summer, as reported by the Express.
Arsenal transfer rumours
As the report suggests, we have long been linked with a move for the Portuguese monster. He looks like a real star of the future, and we are badly lacking in defensive midfield at the moment.
It looks like we could be out of luck though, with the Express reporting that during an interview on Portuguese TV manager Jorge Jesus ruled out a move away for Carvalho.
“William is a certainty. Sporting has young people who are already certainties, are not hopes or doubts. William will be enhanced if the team is also,” he said, as quoted by the Express.
“Only players value the team respond to winning titles. He’s a player with features to play more. I have no doubt that with me will play more.”

It’s hard to take his quotes too seriously, as he may not have any control over the player’s transfer.
Carvalho reportedly has a £25m buyout clause (via the Express), and if we are willing to meet it then it’s hard to see him turning us down. A switch to the Emirates would presumably see his wages rise exponentially, and he would be in with a much better chance of winning major trophies.
It would be madness for the tough tackling young midfielder to turn down a move to Arsenal, and I for one don’t believe we are out of the running – despite Jesus’ comments.
