Wojciech Szczesny has reportedly been fined £20,000 for smoking in the showers after the Southampton loss where he was at fault for both goals of the 2-0 defeat.
Arsene Wenger is said to be ‘furious’ after the 24-year-old decided to light up in the showers, with the Frenchman particularly strong in his opinions regarding smoking as a professional footballer.
Jack Wilshere has been in the spotlight for various smoking incidents, but has since apologized and classified it as a mistake. However the England midfielder was unwinding on holiday similarly to past pictures of Szczesny in 2013 puffing away.
Szczesny perhaps uses smoking as a coping mechanism for particularly stressful moments. He had an evening to forget against Southampton and unfortunately has been caught. But it is something he will learn from and will not place his ‘future in jeopardy’ as some reports are suggesting.
As per usual the English media are blowing this one out of proportion. But as a role model and professional athlete it is not something that will be taken lightly with Wenger hence the potential ludicrously expensive fine.
