Arsene Wenger provided an injury update today ahead of this Saturday’s showdown with Manchester United at Emirates, confirming some good news for both Mikel Arteta and Olivier Giroud.
Giroud has been out for some time after suffering a fractured leg at the end of August, but is well ahead of schedule and seems likely to be part of the squad this weekend. Meanwhile Arteta has been absent since hobbling off against Anderlecht recently, and provides a welcomed boost to the squad.
Wenger also revealed Laurent Koscielny and Mathieu Debuchy are back out on the training ground but are still some weeks off of returning to full training. Much depends on how the duo’s injuries respond.
Lastly the Gunners boss suggested Ozil’s recovery is going ‘well’ but is unlikely to feature until the New Year. No mention on Danny Welbeck, but no news is good news in the Englishman’s case.
Wenger revealed the following team news:
[on Giroud and Arteta] Giroud and Arteta are both available. It’s just a question of how ready they are. But they are available.
- Arsenal keeping tabs on €40m Italy star after ‘outstanding’ season
- Where Arsenal would have finished in the league without VAR
- Arsenal’s top Hector Bellerin replacement is now available for £30m
[on Giroud] He is three or four weeks ahead of schedule. Originally we planned to have him back for competition at the beginning of next year. So he’s one month ahead.
[on relying on Welbeck while Giroud was out] Yes, and on Sanchez as well. But we have Giroud back, we have Walcott back. Slowly they will integrate into the team again and give us different options.
[on Koscielny and Debuchy] Koscielny and Debuchy are doing well, they are out on the field [working] again. We have to see now. Usually field work is three weeks away from full group training. Then there is fitness. It looks straightforward for Debuchy. It’s not inflammation, it’s just repairing surgery. For Koscielny, it depends how well he responds to training. At the moment he looks good.
[on Ozil] Ozil is doing well but he will not be ready before the start of 2015.
