Arsene Wenger has risked further infuriating Arsenal fans following our 3-2 loss against Manchester United, by highlighting the amount of money Louis van Gaal has spent on his side, as reported by the Evening Standard.
During the post-match interview, Wenger was naturally quizzed about the nature of the result. With 18-year-old Marcus Rashford scoring twice in a matter of minutes, the focus was obviously on youth, but Wenger was quick to point out the money van Gaal has spent since arriving at the club.
“Let’s not go overboard,” he responded, when asked whether United’s young team lacked the quality of Arsenal.
“They had a few millions on the pitch today; from [David] de Gea to their whole midfield who were experienced. They spent a lot of money on it.”
While he’s not wrong – with the likes of Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo, Michael Carrick, and Daley Blind, and Morgan Schneiderlin costing a huge amount – it’s not really an excuse he should be using.
Arsenal fans are already furious with Wenger’s lack of spending, and whether it’s an unwillingness or an inability, it’s got Gooners baying for blood. So to use United’s spending as any kind of an excuse when that’s exactly what Arsenal fans want to see from him, is really just asking for trouble.

On top of that, you can’t ignore the fact that United were without a host of big name players. They were the ones rocked by injuries for once, and there is no doubt we should have taken all three points. We’ve already beaten what was considered a full-strength United team once this season, so to perform so badly against an injury ravaged Red Devils side is just embarrassing.
