At times it has felt like Arsene Wenger has restructured the side to accommodate Jack Wilshere. Take for example Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Everton that saw Mesut Ozil shifted to the left and Aaron Ramsey struggling to find the space he usually bombs forward into.
Now it’s not to take anything away from what Wilshere can do. The Englishman is an incredible footballer and should certainly be in and around the starting lineup when he’s in form, but basically he has not looked sharp for some time.
Injuries have played a big part of this, how can a player develop and progress when he’s injured for chunks at a time? Meanwhile, Ramsey’s rise to prominence has done little to help Wilshere’s case to play in the box-to-box role. Tonight against Besiktas however there is no Welshman due to his sending off in the first leg.
This is the perfect platform for Wilshere to really show what he’s about. Flamini holding, Santi on the left, Ozil through the middle. Everyone that is fit will be in their preferred roles, not to mention we’re at Emirates.
At a time when one of Wenger’s prodigies is struggling for form, let’s not get on his back but support him. Remember the goal against Norwich last season? The stunning finish against Marseille? The passion he continues to show for the club? Keep the faith Gooners and get behind the Englishman tonight.
