Chelsea and Manchester City are reportedly battling it out to sign Arsenal reject Alex Song, who spent last season on loan at West Ham, with both clubs struggling to fulfil their homegrown quota, Sky Sports report.
Song is considered surplus to requirements at Barcelona and impressed during the first half of the season for West Ham. However, as we became accustomed to with the Cameroon international during his time at the Emirates, he struggled to keep his focus for the entirety of the season.
The search for homegrown players from the aforementioned clubs seems rather odd considering that they have a number of talented players in their academies.

Their youth teams competed in this summer’s FA Youth cup which was won by Chelsea yet again, but their respctive managers can’t seem to find homegrown players from their development squads?
The simple fact that Song is seen as a more viable option than to give a younger player his opportunity could be the exact reason why Greg Dyke seems keen to raise the homegrown quota and force clubs to develop their own talent (via Sky Sports).
