Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista is a top target for both Arsenal and Barcelona this January, and we have just taken a commanding lead in the race for his signature, according to Spanish publication Globoesporte.
The 24-year-old is seen as the ideal signing to strengthen our threadbare defence, but a deal had begun to look unlikely.
The Brazilian could still be on his way to the Emirates however, after revealing that a move to the Premier League was a “dream” of his.
“I will not lie to you. Before the end of the year, before the whole story of interest of Barcelona and Arsenal even happened, my manager was here and had a conversation with him,” he said.
“One of the things I said was my dream to play in England. I have this desire. Now this, for me it was a great joy.”
Paulista only joined Villarreal in 2013, but has attracted a huge amount of attention since making the switch from South America.

He is one of a number of defensive targets Arsene Wenger is believed to be targeting this January, but this latest revelation could see the La Liga star jump to the top of the list. He may not offer Premier League experience like Winston Reid, but he is certainly a top quality defender who could add a huge amount to our back line.
