Unai Emery has claimed that he and his coaches stopped Arsenal’s two-year “downward slope” as the club’s head coach (via GFFN).
The dust has started to settle on Unai Emery’s time at Arsenal, around two months after he left the club.
The Gunners went through their worst start to the season in decades under the Spaniard who has since been replaced by Mikel Arteta.
Now, the former Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain boss has spoken about the positive impact he thinks he and his coaching team had on the Gunners.
“Arsenal was a club on a downward slope for two years before I arrived,” Emery told France Football.
“We stopped this fall and even began to rebuild the club with the Europa League final and 5th place in the league, only one point off of Tottenham despite the fact that we took just one point in our final five matches.
“We had Champions’ League qualification in our grasp and it went wrong in the end. But it was a good season and we had this notion of continuing to improve.
“But we lost our four captains: Koscielny, Cech, Ramsey and Monreal. They were personalities that we missed this season to stay on the right track. And some stars did not have a good attitude and asked for more than what they were giving back.
“Taking all of that into account, we needed time to succeed with our transition to a new Arsenal which is what I wanted.”
It’s an unusual series of quotes from Unai Emery. It feels an awful lot like a slate-cleaning interview from the Spaniard as he aims to get another job in football. It will be difficult to find many Arsenal fans who agree with Emery’s analysis of his own time in charge of the Gunners.
