Arsenal are once again in the precarious position of losing a player on a free transfer due to letting a contract run to its final months – this time it’s 22-year-old Eddie Nketiah.
The news from TEAMtalk is that Arsenal are willing to hand the young English striker a three-year contract – a real commitment to a bit-part player that showed his worth by scoring against Leeds last time out.
The one promise that Nketiah wants kept by manager Mikel Arteta is that there’s a not too distant pathway to being given a ‘more prominent role’ in the first XI.
While given chances here and there and in League Cup games, it has never looked like Nketiah would be a natural successor to a Alexandre Lacazette or Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang – at least based on a lack of opportunity in the Premier League.
Arteta did however speak after the goalscoring cameo by Nketiah, signing the praises of the striker soon to be a free agent:
“I have full belief that he’s going to be a top, top player and hopefully at Arsenal.”
