Most Arsenal fans gave up hope of signing Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema after the Frenchman seemingly confirmed his plans to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu on Twitter (via The Telegraph).
The rumour mill continues to rumble on though, and the latest news is that we are still in with a chance of signing the 27-year-old, as Los Blancos have identified Paris Saint-Germain’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a potential replacement (via the Metro).
This seems a little far-fetched, and it’s difficult to see Madrid swapping Benzema for the giant Swede. Ibrahimovic is unquestionably talented, but with the former Barcelona striker approaching 34-years-of-age, he is arguably well past his best.
The Metro cite Spanish outlet Fichajes, and unless something more concrete emerges then we should take this news with a pinch of salt.
Madrid’s reported interest in players like Ibrahimovic and Lewandowski (via the Metro) suggest a move is possible, but until we see a new arrival at the Bernabeu it seems unlikely Benzema will be leaving.

He would obviously be a superb signing, but we may have to focus our efforts elsewhere if we’re to have any hope of signing a striker this summer.
