Arsenal today announced that Abou Diaby has been released after nine years at the club which were troubled by various injury problems.

For us fans, the notion of ‘what might have been?’ definitely seems justified in the Frenchman’s case such was his majestic talents when he was consistently on the pitch.

After suffering a cruciate ligament injury in March 2013, we only saw him feature two more times for the first team before his contract expired this month.

5) Abou Diaby vs Liverpool – April 2008
In what was one of the most entertaining Champions League ties for the neutral in the last 10 years, Diaby produced a stunning display to announce himself on the European stage.
The Frenchman finished off a sensational team goal to give us the lead, but suicidal defending from Philippe Senderos and Kolo Toure eventually lost us the match.
