Alexis Sanchez reached the pinnacle of his career to date on Saturday night after his cheeky penalty defeated Argentina and handed Chile their first ever major trophy after clinching the Copa America on home soil.
The likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Ever Banega missed for the World Cup runners-up, which gave Alexis the chance to step up and send his nation into hysteria.
Having missed his last two penalties, including one in the penalty shootout defeat against Brazil at last summer’s World Cup, Alexis showed nerves of steel to dink the ball down the middle and send Sergio Romero the wrong way.
Alongside Arturo Vidal, Alexis was one of the best players on the pitch throughout the game and after missing a glorious chance in extra-time, the 26-year-old might not have forgiven himself had he not ended up victorious.
The Chilean star has played over 70 games since last summer and is need of an extended break which will certainly be handed to him by the club.
