There was a mixture of cheering and sighs of relief when Laurent Koscielny stabbed in from a corner against Newcastle, with an Arsenal goal unquestionably coming against the run of play.
Despite being overwhelming favourites to get the win over relegation candidates Newcastle, we had been absolutely shocking for much of the game. After an early spell of dominance we totally retreated into ourselves, and our failure to press or move the ball around quick enough meant the Magpies were able to settle on the ball far too easily.
We easily could have gone behind a number of times, but Petr Cech managed to keep us in the game. And thankfully so, as just after the 70th minute Koscielny put us into the lead.
Mesut Özil swung a corner in, but it looked as though it would come to nothing. Olivier Giroud’s strength allowed him to win the second ball however, and his flick on fell straight at the feet of his compatriot Koscielny. The French defender stabbed it past Rob Elliot from close range, giving us somewhat undeserved lead.
Hopefully we can keep hold of our lead and get the much needed win, as with others around us struggling we could open up a lead at the top of the table.

Arsenal transfer news
Title winning teams need to be able to win even when playing badly, and today we’ve certainly played badly. We’ve seen how badly we can be punished when we aren’t at our best, and we’re lucky the game didn’t start off the same way our clash with Southampton did.
