The euphoria which surrounded his arrival was palpable. In theory, signing a player with Podolski’s resume should turn out to be an instant success.
A player close to 100 caps for Germany at the time – despite only being 26 – Podolski is now the third highest goalscorer in his nation’s history.
However, he failed to maintain the intensity displayed in his first few months but a few memories will always remain.
- Arsenal must outmanoeuvre Galatasaray to win race for £2m ‘bargain’ transfer
- Arsenal reportedly set to sign free agent after impressive trial
- Arsenal have ‘concrete interest’ in signing Bayern Munich II star
Here are Podolski’s top five moments with us.
5) Podolski’s first goal – vs Liverpool
Trying to the fill the boots of Robin van Persie was always going to be difficult, especially when the Dutchman netted 37 times in the previous campaign.
However, after we failed to score in our opening two games, Podolski proved that he had a left foot which matched his predecessor with a lethal finish past Pepe Reina.
It would become a sight Arsenal fans would get used to.
