Laurent Koscielny was among a number of players who put in an excellent performance against Olympiacos this past Wednesday night, and has been recognised for his qualities by ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.
The retired defender claims Laurent Koscielny is the best centre-back in the Premier League, and when he’s fully fit nobody can compare to him.
Ferdinand was speaking on BT Sport in the wake of our 3-0 win over Greek giants Olympiacos, a win Koscielny was largely responsible for. He admitted that Olivier Giroud was likely to get most of the plaudits for grabbing his first Arsenal hat-trick – and picking an excellent time to do so – but Koscielny’s role in the win cannot be understated.
The French defender made a number of vital interceptions and clearances, including one incident where he acrobatically cleared a cross that looked destined to end up in the back of the net. It came at a time when conceding would have been disastrous, and the cleansheet gave us the platform to go on and get the win.
It’s hard to disagree with Ferdinand, as there really aren’t many defenders who even come close to the Arsenal man. There was a time when John Terry was arguably the best in the league, but age finally seems to have caught up with the Chelsea man. Vincent Kompany has also proved one of the best in the game at times, but his inconsistency and problems with injury mean he can’t hold a candle to Koscielny. And who else is there really?

There are question marks over the defensive partners available to Koscielny at the Emirates, but he’s shown he’s able to make up for the lack of pace and the mistakes of Per Mertesacker. We look a far better team with Koscielny in the side, so hopefully he remains injury free this season.
