Arsenal legend and current Football Development Executive of Manchester City Patrick Vieira has warned Arsenal that keeping talisman Robin van Persie is absolutely essential to the future of the club and should have been resolved ages ago.
The former midfield hard-man gave it to Arsenal fans straight and definitely re-iterated issues that Gooners have been voicing for a decent while now.
While there is much bitterness over Wenger’s inability to re-sign Van Persie, it must be remembered that the Dutchman was adament he would not hold talks until after this season. In effect, he now holds most of the cards.
With now only a year remaining on his contract, Arsenal now face the tough task re-signing the Dutchman or else potentially losing him on a free next summer if he is not sold now. Obviously many other high profile clubs are watching what happens very closely.
Vieira is quoted as saying by the Mirror on Van Persie:
I’m quite surprised they have waited until he has only a year left on his contract to talk to him. It’s difficult to find players of Robin’s quality anywhere in the world with only a year left – especially strikers who can score 34 goals in a season. It’s difficult to understand.
- Arsenal must outmanoeuvre Galatasaray to win race for £2m ‘bargain’ transfer
- Arsenal reportedly set to sign free agent after impressive trial
- Arsenal have ‘concrete interest’ in signing Bayern Munich II star
Robin wants to win trophies – and Arsenal have to prove he can do it with them.
We know that Robin loves Arsenal. That is not the question – the real question is how Arsene Wenger will convince Robin they can win trophies.
I’m not the right person to tell him what he should do but, knowing Robin, I don’t think it will be only City who would like this kind of player.
I don’t think you have many talents like Robin who have just one year left on their contracts – I think there will be a lot of teams who want a signing like him.
It will be as difficult (for Arsenal) as when they lost Cesc Fabregas or Samir Nasri last summer. And if they lose Robin now, who is left behind? That is a big question for Arsenal.a.
Of course, it is going to be difficult to keep him or convince him to stay, but I don’t know what is the plan for them.
From Arsenal’s point of view, I think this is something they should have closed a long time ago, but Arsenal don’t need me to tell them what to do. That’s the way it is and they will have to deal with it.
It is pretty clear here all the points raised by Vieira are completely valid and are all points that Gooners have been voicing for a while now. It also seems pretty clear that Manchester City are definitely interested despite their ridiculous amount of strikers and the crazy amount of wages they currently pay out.
Personally speaking, there is no doubt that the potential departure of Van Persie could have a knock-on effect to our other high profile players. The departures of Cesc and Samir in a way have already started that. It is pretty clear that Wenger has to stop this trend now or face a downward spiral in seasons to come.
